You always want to represent a range of human experiences in drama and I feel that mental illness is underrepresented because people see it as too problematic. ''It's about getting those specific personal stories and anecdotes that you just can't make up. ''He is very involved in their local church and soccer, they recognise isolation is a bad thing and have developed a fulfilling life to manage their condition,'' he said. Mr Dolman, who has written for television series in Australia and overseas including The Bill, said it had been inspiring to meet a couple with schizophrenia and hear how they cope. They are run by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health in partnership with the Australian Writers' Guild and SANE Australia. Workshops have also been held in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide, with more planned. Mr Dolman was among a dozen scriptwriters to attend a recent workshop in Melbourne aimed at encouraging accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental illness.Īlong with facts and figures to debunk some commonly held stereotypes, the workshop included people with mental illness giving insights into some of their experiences.
